Learning in a Familiar Language

The Pakistan Institute of Education (PIE) has officially launched its latest research report titled “Learning in a Familiar Language: An Impact Analysis of the Language of Instruction on Student Outcomes and Learning Experiences in Pakistan.” The event brought together key education stakeholders and policymakers to discuss the impact of mother tongue instruction on student learning. The session began with opening remarks by Dr. Ehtasham, Former Secretary, School Education Department Punjab, and concluded with reflections by Ms. Nishat Riaz, Chief Executive of the Malala Fund Pakistan. Mr. Naveed, Joint Education Advisor, MOFEPT, attended as Chief Guest. Mr. Alberto presented the report findings and Dr. Adrees introduced the background of study.

The event was attended by representatives from leading national and international organizations including FDE, NCHD, Cambridge University, VSO, UNHCR, FCDO, World Bank, PAMS, Tabadlab and JICA. Participants engaged in meaningful dialogue on how language of instruction influences learning equity, classroom participation, and long-term academic performance in Pakistan. The report presents strong evidence to inform education policy and strengthen student-centered learning practices.

On this occasion, Dr. Shahid Soroya, Director General of PIE, remarked: “This research underscores the transformative power of learning in a language students understand best. It is not just about language — it’s about equity, access, and opportunity for every child in Pakistan.” The study is expected to serve as a valuable tool for decision-makers working to improve the quality and inclusivity of education across the country.
